If you've been on social media this past week then I'm sure you've seen the Free Kesha hashtag everywhere. And if you don't know who Kesha is I feel deeply sorry for your tween/teenage years being deprived from the bops she provided us with, such as Tik Tok and Die Young. Kesha was sexually and mentally abused by her producer at Sony, Dr. Luke. She's taken it to court so she can freely produce music without having to be in contract with her abuser. Sadly, the judge sided with Sony and is making Kesha keep her contract. This means that she will have to work with and be in contract with the man that sexually abused her. She's not even asking to punish him, she's only asking to not have to work with him. It's absurd to me that they won't free Kesha of her contract because there "isn't enough evidence." Did you know that 80% percent of sexual abuses go unreported? 80% is a hell of a lot. Someone finally has the courage to speak up and defend themselves and nothing is done to protect them. Even when it's someone as well known as Kesha. The judges ruling is not going to help that percentage. Young girls and boys who have been sexually abused will see this in the media and see how nothing is being done to help Kesha, and they're gonna think that nothing will be done to help them either. This case should be an example for people to speak out when they've been raped or abused. Instead, it's making them more afraid, afraid that it's their fault and they will be punished. The victim should never be punished. Please educate yourself, educate others and help in anyway you can. #FreeKesha XOXO Erin
